My rude awakening

Posted on: July 8, 2008 2:52 pm

I was rudely awakened today driving the truck over to the gas station this morning. I had allowed the truck to get alittle bit low in fuel, more than I ever do. So when I pulled up I saw the sign, $3.95 and said to myself. "Damn you Bush!" anyway after I slipped my Exxon card into the pump I started filling up the beast. I couldn't help but notice that the total of the "dollars per" sky rocketed upwards with the force of the Disovery shuttle on it's way to the spacestation meanwhile the "gallons per" slugishly rose with no sense of urgency. As I stood there weeks seemed to go by and I still wasn't done. It wasn't until about 99.71 that I started cussing out loud and yelling "Stop! Stop!"Finally, a if by some higher authority the magical sound broke the silence as the auto stop clicked.$100.00 dollars was gone. Just like that. I glared at the pump like it was a bully in grade school that stole my bike. I felt betrayed. Used. It was then that I realized how much trouble our country is actually in. What the war in Iraq and Bush is doing to the economy. I have never really wanted to pay attention to it I guess. I know that some of you are already paying well over $4.00 for gas but where will it stop? When will we get some kind of relief? The same bunch of crooks that keep raising the price at the pump are the same ones reporting record high profits for their quarters.(not the gas stations themselves) I am just complaining out loud and I do apologize. Get back to me and tell me your thoughts and experiences. I would love to hear them. I plan on buying a motorcyle for now and parking the beast. Thank for reading.

My rude awakening

First of all:  $3.95.  It's almost $4.50 here in NY where I live.

I feel sorry for the americans who live in more rural areas where having a truck is a necessity.  Luckily I live in a metro area and had the foresight and desire to go hybrid.  My wife and I both have hybrids.  We're getting about 45 mpg for every tank of gas.  I know I'm lucky because having a small 2-wheel drive vehicle isn't an option for a lot of people.

While I'm not a huge GW Bush fan, I can't blame him entirely for our current gas dilemma.  What we are witnessing now is close to 2 decades of cheap gas, consumer ignorance, government inactivity, and kowtowing to big oil.

It kills me when I drive around the city and see someone driving around in a hummer or other behemoth that gets 11 mpg (if that).  Sure they may be able to afford the gas, but in a free market economy, it's about supply and demand.  Because of the selfishness of some, everyone's gas prices go up.

For years certain groups have been lobbying the government to raise fuel economy standards.  Because gas has been relatively inexpensive, society at large saw no real reason to force the issue.  The government has been hesitant because the auto and oil industry has real financial reason for not wanting to see this happen.

Of course this is an over-simplification, but I think it sums things.

While suspending the gas tax would bring temporary relief to consumers, in the long run it will be like putting a band-aid on a cancerous lesion.  Cheaper gas prices means that people will consume more gas.  Greater demand will once again lead to a rise in oil prices, which will again cause an increase at the pump.

My rude awakening

I actually saw gas here for $4.05 this past weekend.  There are still some places that I've seen it for about $3.80.  Although I'm very disappointed in G.W., all the blame can't fall on him.  Ever since America voted for the great change in '06 and got a Democratic controlled Congress, gas prices have shot through the roof.  I'm also not blaming them entirely either.  Alot has happened to influence the gas prices.  Hurricane Katrina helped to shut down production in the Gulf of Mexico for a while in '05.  With the environmentalists raising 7 levels of hell over drilling off the coast of Florida and ANWR has hurt our own potential domestic production.  It also hasn't helped that the oil companies have not opened any new refineries in about 30 years.  The more I think about it, the Amish probably have the best idea using horses & buggies.

My rude awakening

yeah the hybrid idea has been in my head for sometime. I was watching the tech news and they have unveiled 100% Electronic autos that can drive for 200 miles on one charge and they have the speed and agility of their gas counterparts. The downside is price. $100k, I guess it will be a while before we see that price go down. It is built by Mercedes. A motorcycle is a great way to reduce the gas bill but I wear a suit to work and I live too far away from the office. I have a 4 cylinder that I drive almost everywhere but it is in need of an alternator. Thats why it hit me so hard this morning. I am not used to driving the truck so when I have to it really sucks. Thanks for your comments. Hows the baby?

My rude awakening

I know that its a political thing. We want to use everyone elses oil first because it's cheaper and we have too many enviromentalists fighting the Gov. for drilling. It is also true that the Hurricane seasons have effected the price but so has the war and now that there is new possibilities that we will go to war with Iran the price has gone up even further. I have a skateboard in the back of the truck. I just might jump on that bad boy. Thanks for posting True_Rebel.
